The Museum Boardgame

MB is a game of curation and exhibitionism in which 3 players compete for the most points by strategically swapping Exhibit Tiles and acquiring Visitor Tokens.

Game Pieces

  • 3 Museum game boards
  • 48 unique Exhibit Tiles
  • 60 Visitor Tokens
  • A pair of dice, each a different colour
Set-Up

  • Each player takes a board and places it in front of them.
  • Jumble the Exhibit Tiles together face down into a pile in the centre of the table.
  • Determine which player will go first with a high dice roll or any other method agreed upon by the group.
  • Assign each coloured die to one side of the board.
  • In clockwise order, each player takes turns choosing an Exhibit Tile and placing it on their game board. Place Exhibit Tiles in sequential order, beginning in the top left and ending with the Storage Spaces.
  • Once all Exhibit Tiles have been placed the set-up phase is over and the game can begin.
Game Rules

Rolling the Dice
  • The dice are rolled at the beginning of a player's turn. The numbers on each die determine the Active Tiles for that turn. For example, if the red die turns up a 5 and the yellow die turns up a 2, then Exhibit Spaces #5 in the left wing of the museum board and #2 in the right wing become the Active Tiles that can be played during the turn.
  • If the dice add up to 7, as in the above example, the player who rolled it must swap all of his Exhibit Tiles in storage with those of his choosing from the storage of the other players. He can choose to swap with just one other player, or both. This swap is done after both Active Tiles have been played, and will end the turn.
Playing the Active Tiles
  • Only one action can be performed on each Active Tile per turn.
  • The player can place a Visitor Token on an Active Tile's Exhibit Space. There can be no more than 5 Visitor Tokens per Exhibit Space.
  • The player can swap an Active Tile with an adjacent Exhibit Tile. If the two tiles being swapped are in different Exhibition Halls, then all Visitor Tokens on the Exhibit Spaces are removed from the board.
  • The player can swap an Active Tile with a tile that is in storage, removing any Visitor Tokens that were on the Exhibit Space.
Scoring and Winning the Game
  • Before their turn ends, the player has the option of scoring one Exhibit Hall. The Visitor Tokens are added up and multipliers applied to determine the score, which is written down on a piece of paper. All Visitor Tokens are then removed and the Exhibit Tiles in the scored hall are swapped with those of the player's choosing in storage.
  • The game is over once a player has obtained ?? points.
Scoring Multipliers
0x - 2 tiles have matching properties, 1 is different
1x - All tiles have different properties
1x - Set from the same collection
2x - Set that matches in theme
3x - Set from same group
